Standard Floating Shelf Dimensions: Complete Size & Depth Guide
Choosing the right sizes of floating shelf for your home can make or break the appearance and function of a room. Too shallow, and you’ve got only a decorative shelf. Too deep, and you have an over-bearing floating shelf on top of your small wall. Here at Shop Solutions Midlands Ltd, we’re asked almost daily by our customers how deep, long, and thick a floating shelf should be, so we’ve written this guide to help you get it right the first time.
Standard Floating Shelf Dimensions Breakdown
Before you buy or build, it’s good to know the three dimensions of each floating shelf: depth, length, and thickness. Each of these dimensions affects the performance and appearance of the shelf on your wall.
Standard Floating Shelf Depth (15 cm – 30 cm)
Depth is the most important of all floating shelf dimensions. It tells you how much you can stuff on it. A depth of 15–20 cm is a good depth for smaller accessories like framed photos, candles, or small plants. For more practical items like books, kitchenware, or speakers, the recommended depth is 25–30 cm. There is always the possibility to go above 30 cm, but typically it is safer to put a shelf supported rather than floating.
Recommended Floating Shelf Length (60 cm – 120 cm)
Lather is a design decision, but there are some limits: a shelf under 60 cm can be used above any small items like a toilet or bedside table. Between 80 and 100 cm is the ideal size for most living rooms and kitchens as it provides enough surface area without requiring extra fixings. Anything over 100 and 120 cm will need additional wall anchors or support brackets for center support, as well as a center support bracket to stop the shelves from sagging with heavy loads.
Ideal Floating Shelf Thickness (2 cm – 4 cm)
Thicker shelves are generally cheaper and more stylish compared to thicker ones. Thin floating shelves can be made as thin as 2cm for an ultra-modern look, but with a slim profile ideal for smaller items. A thicker shelf 3–4cm thick is stronger and will be used on shelves stacked with books or kitchen accessories, as it creates additional rigidity and reduces the possibility of flexing. For a more chunky look, consider floating shelves built up to 5cm thick (sometimes with a hollow box construction).
How to Choose the Right Floating Shelf Dimensions by Room
The right size is not always right, depending on where the shelf will go and what it will hold. Here’s how dimensions of floating shelves may vary from room to room.
Kitchen Floating Shelf Sizes
The shelves need to balance storage and clearance. A depth of 20-25 cm is ideal for mugs, jars, and cookbooks without the shelves looking crowded near worktops. Keep the shelves length to 60–90 cm per shelf, so that weight is managed, and 3–4 cm thickness is fine as they are used regularly, when the oven heats up, or when something gets bumped by cookware.
Living Room Display Shelf Sizes
The most flexible room to work with is the living room. For a gallery of books, ornaments, and framed art, you can get by with a shelf’s depth of 20–25 cm and length of 80–120 cm. If your shelf will be used to store a TV soundbar or other media equipment, try 25–30 cm down and double-check the weight capacity, since electronics can be heavier than they appear.
Bathroom & Bedroom Storage Shelf Sizes
Bathrooms need narrower shelves (15-20 cm deep and 40- 60 cm long) to store toiletries without occupying precious space. Use moisture-resistant materials. Bedroom shelves are 20-25 cm deep and 60-100 cm long, and can be used to hold books, lamps, or a small speaker beside the bed.
Floating Shelf Dimensions & Weight Capacity Matrix
As a general guide, weight capacity scales with depth, thickness, and the number of wall fixings used — not just the shelf’s outward size:
| Depth | Thickness | Length | Approx. Weight Capacity |
| 15 cm | 2 cm | 60 cm | 5–8 kg |
| 20 cm | 3 cm | 80 cm | 10–15 kg |
| 25 cm | 3–4 cm | 90 cm | 15–20 kg |
| 30 cm | 4 cm | 100 cm | 20–25 kg |
| 30 cm | 4–5 cm | 120 cm+ | 25 kg+ (with center support) |
The figures assume that the shelf is properly screwed into studs or solid masonry, not plasterboard. Always check the manufacturer’s suggested load rating before hanging heavier items and if in doubt, size up.
Check your floating shelf dimensions first, and you won’t have to keep re-drilling, re-anchoring, or replacing a shelf that just wasn’t cut out to fit. For more on how wall shelving sizes differ for bracketed, built in, and modular shelving, look at our Complete Guide to Wall Shelving Dimensions.
